Genestealer Patriarch #10

Progress on the Patriarch. This time I was working through how I wanted the claws to look. Originally I thought I would go with a glossy black claw, but in the end I opted for traditional bone color, so I could add blood effects, later. More to come.

So I added a thined coat of Minitaire Ghost Tint Magenta to the recess of the "fleshy" areas on the Patriarch. It worked very nicely on the ribbed sections, but totally flubbed the brain area.  Short of repainting the brain area, I am a little stumped as to what to do about this. Maybe another recess wash of Vallejo Game Color Wash Violet or something.   Oh, I also added the Patriarch to the base. I haven't added the final arm, yet, as it will get in the way of working on the brain section. Let me ponder over this one. More to come.

So I got asked to show a close up of the Patriarch base, i.e. how did it turn out? To be honest, I still haven't finished painting it, but the water effects ended up a little less that what was desired. So to get around this, I dumped some Badger Minitaire Ghost Tint Green into the "water" section and that seemed to make it all pop and work. More to come.

Progress on the Patriarch, in this installment. The carapace is painted, and waiting for a glaze to even out the tones and the fleshy sections have been given some life. I opted for a more traditional Space hulk feel on this one.  I created the colors for the carapce using Vallejo Game Air Black as the base color, followed with multiple dry-brush layers of Vallejo Game Air Wolf Grey and Vallejo Model Color Azure Blue. I will knock the extreme color with a glaze of GW Glaze Guillaume Blue. The fleshy section were then painted Vallejo Model Game Color Dead White, then washed with a 50/50 mix Vallejo Model Color Wash Violet and Yellow. This brought out a fleshy feeling to the miniature, but I felt it just needed a little more. And yes, it's not yet attached to the base yet.   More to come, when I work out how to make the flesh pop a little more and look more "fleshy".

Water effects are coming along a little better this time.

So I started back on redoing the base on the Patriarch. I splashed a large amount of GW Technical Nurgle's Rot. Now I will go back in with some water effects. I wasn't happy with the Secret Weapon Water Effects, so I am going to try a different product, Magic Water from Unreal Details .

So what do you do when Plan-A goes astray? For example, the liquid effect on the base of the Genestealer Patriarch. Unfortunately that "ring" mark around the edge just doesn't seem to want to come good. Below is what it looked like after 3 days of trying to cover over the "ring". Unfortunately, this just didn't meet the cut. So I switched things up, and cut out a portion of the base and rebuilt an new false base.  So the idea is to paint inside the base then pour the liquid effects inside. Here is what the underside looks like. I had to make it a little water tight for when I pour in the liquid effects. More to come on this one.

So the first attempt on the water effects had mixed results. You can see that it formed a small lip where the tape was. So while I was thinking about how to fix this up, I added some  GW Technical Nihilakh Oxide into the ridges of the pipe. In the end I topped up the ring with more Water Effects. Now I just have to wait for it to dry, so I can then come back to trim and clean up the rim. More to come.

Progress continues on the base for the Patriarch.  I added some GW Technical Paint Nurgle's Rot to the pipe and put down a layer on the base, to emulate a puddle. I then went back and taped off the base, adding Secret Weapon Water Effects over this layer to give it a three-dimensional feeling. I will let you know how this one turned out, when it dries.

It happened. Deathwatch: Overkill. I just had to build that Patriarch.  Here is how it has started out. More to come.
